Malware poses a major security threat to the information security. Malware writersexplore new attack vectors to exploit vulnerabilities in information systems. This leadsto ever more sophisticated malware attacks, including drive-by malware,maladvertising” (or “malvertising”), Advanced Persistent Threats, and so on. Thoughorganizations try hard to defend themselves using comprehensive security policies andadvanced anti-malware controls, the current trend indicates that malware applicationsare targeting “lower-hanging fruit”: undersecured smartphones, mobile applications,social media, and cloud services. The problem is further complicated because of threatpredictions. As McAfee stated in its McAfee Labs Threats Report published in December2017, “The biggest number of the quarter is our count of new malware, which reachedan all-time high of 57.6 million new samples, an increase of 10% from Q2. The totalcount in the McAfee Labs sample database is now more than 780 million. Newransomware rose by 36% this quarter, largely from widespread Android screen-lockingmalware. The easy availability of exploit kits and dark web sources fuel the rapidcreation of new malware.” Assessing an organization’s information system againstmalware threats is a major challenge today because of the quickly-changing nature ofmalware threats. You need to be well versed in the latest developments in the field andunderstand the basic functioning of malware to select and implement controlsappropriate to your organization and its needs. The labs in this module will provide afirst-hand experience with various techniques that attackers use to write and propagatemalware. You will also learn how to effectively select security controls to protect yourinformation assets from malware threats.
